Maui me te Rā

Maui is sad, confused and annoyed because the day was going fast . He then found out that it was the sun so he decided to catch the sun before it rises and teach it to travel slowly across the sky!" The next day Māui and his whānau collected a huge amount of flax. Māui then taught them how to make flax ropes, they made square shaped ropes, tuamaka, flat ropes, paharahara, and twisted the flax to make round ropes. When the ropes were completed and ready for use Māui and his brothers travelled towards the east to where the sun first rises. They waited for the sun to come out of its hole, once the sun came out they threw the ropes on it.  Maui told the sun "From now on you will travel slowly across the sky, never again will the length of our day be dictated by you”.  He had succeeded in taming the sun. From that day until this, Tamanuiterā has always travelled slowly across the sky.

It’s a beautiful story isn't it. You’ve done a really great job at retelling it. Do you speak much Māori yourself?

    Meri Kirihimete, Merry Christmas,

  2. I'm Egyptian so I don't speak or understand Maori but thanks to Google Translate I was able to understand the activity and finish it.
    Merry Christmas to you too.
