Building a Dam

For today's activity we had to create our own Dam using objects from nature, like leaves, sticks and rocks.

Did you know that the tallest Dam in the world is 300 meters high it's called Nurek Dam in Tajikistan.

Did you know that the Ancient Egyptian Sadd-el-Kafara Dam at Wadi Al-Garawi, located about 25 km (16 mi) south of Cairo, was 102 m (335 ft) long at its base and 87 m (285 ft) wide. The structure was built around 2800 or 2600 BC.

Did you know that the first dam for which reliable records exist was built on the Nile River sometime before 4000 BC. near the ancient city of Memphis.

    Ben here again.
I noticed these images online and realised they were here just as an example. They do show though a really great attempt at dam building. I’d really recommend that you go back to this activity and try to recreate the beaver dam yourself.
I’ve noticed many students doing this activity on the computer. A lot of students have opted to draw a digital image of a dam rather than building one outside or with materials in the house. I think that it’s really important though to get involved physically with these sorts of activities. The learning we obtain from interacting with our hands is really valuable. I hope you find some mud and sticks somewhere!
